If you’re new to vaping and unsure where to begin, walking into a vape shop to choose the right vape kit can feel overwhelming.

There are so many types of e-cigarette to choose from and a lot of new terms to learn, choosing the best vape starter kit for you is an important step especially if you’re making the transition from smoking to vaping. So – let’s start at the beginning.

Components of a Vape Kit Explained:

  1. Drip Tip (Mouthpiece): This is the part you inhale from, acting as a passage for the vapor to travel from the coil to your mouth.

  2. Coil: Constructed from wire mesh and cotton, the coil absorbs e-liquid from the tank, heats it, and transforms it into vapor when you activate the device. Coils come in different resistances—new vapers often prefer mesh coils (0.8ohm to 1.2ohm), while experienced users may opt for sub-ohm coils (below 0.5ohm) for direct-lung vaping.

  3. Tank/Pod: This is the container (made of plastic or glass) that holds the e-liquid and houses the coil. Most modern vapes use a pod system, while high-performance devices typically feature a glass tank.

  4. Battery: The power source of the vape, the battery supplies energy to heat the coil and produce vapor.

This breakdown covers the essential parts of a standard vape kit. Let me know if you’d like any further details!

Some of these components can look a little different depending on the type of vape kit you have. Which leads us nicely onto…

Vape Kits And The Differences Between Devices

  • Disposable vapes are slim, compact, and designed to resemble traditional cigarettes for a familiar experience. As single-use devices, they come pre-filled with a set amount of e-liquid and a non-rechargeable battery, making them convenient but less economical long-term. While great for beginners, their limited lifespan can lead to higher costs over time.

Pod kits, on the other hand, offer a similarly portable and pocket-friendly design. MTL (mouth-to-lung) pod systems are ideal for new vapers, as they closely mimic the sensation of smoking and often support higher nicotine strengths. Unlike disposables, they feature replaceable pods—either pre-filled or refillable—making them a more budget-friendly and sustainable option.

  • Vape pens are one of the most popular choices for new vapers. Their battery longevity is improved again on pod vapes, with charging usually just being through a USB port. Their battery life ranges from a few hours up to a day (obviously this is variable depending on how much you use it). Pen style vape kits are simple to use and you can refill the tank with more juice, meaning you don’t need to spend money on pod refills. They’re simple to use, with just a quick fire button on one side, what you see is what you get.

  • Box mod kits are usually for the more experienced vapers of the world, with options to adjust wattage, temperature and ventilation these offer an incredibly customised vaping experience. Box Mods have significantly more battery capacity, are larger and heavier in size and can be customised more with the option to change to a different tank. Like vape pens, they’re also refillable. Advanced sub-ohm box kits will be powered by an external battery, generally an 18650 li-on battery, as these have the ability to cope with the increased power.
